First things first, I am a total and complete Potterhead! Ever since I read the first book in 1997 I have felt myself in love with the magical world of Hogwarts and often saddened that I am just a muggle! If there really is magic being handed out to people , can I please know where the line is?? I guess I would drop everything and apparate there in seconds.

Now that D is almost 5, I have taken it upon myself to get her to sit through Harry’s movies and I tell her the story too. Can’t really read out the books to her yet coz obviously she wont understand all that much and who has that much time! So until the day I can lay my hands on a time turner like Hermione, I have to console myself with describing the books as best as I can to D. She seems pretty engrossed with it thankfully and doesn’t mind it when I start doing voice overs! Oh yes mister, I love getting my British on and the imaginary wand out! D’s favorite spell right now is “Alohomora”.

One evening I desperately wanted something to soothe my worries away. Hot chocolate helps of course, this Nutella Mocha was wayyy better than hot chocolate and it did help. Next day I made my season favorite pumpkin spice latte with white chocolate. But then I wanted something new. Suddenly this Harry Potter inspired butterbeer latte sounded like a great idea!! But I didn’t really want any alcohol in it since I was pretty sure D would love to try it, so on I went into the wonderful world of world wide web. A quick search for butterbeer shows around 15,80000 results in .30secs!! That’s right. That’s how popular it is. In fact it was one of the most searched for terms on internet. So what’s butterbeer you ask?

Why don’t we go and have a butterbeer in the Three Broomsticks, it’s a bit cold, isn’t it?—Hermione Granger inviting Harry Potter to the Three Broomsticks Inn

It first appeared in the third part of the series, Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban and from then on has made several appearances in the books. A staple for celebration or cold evenings, butterbeer was sold in Hogsmeade. It’s sold at The Three Broomsticks. In Diagon Alley, the drink had been known to be sold at the Leaky Cauldron. As J K Rowling herself said, “I made it up. I imagine it to taste a little bit like less sickly butterscotch.” So that was my cue! I knew it would taste awesome especially since I love butterscotch anything! Case in point, these butterscotch rice pudding people!!!

But boy was it tough zeroing in on one recipe. After four trials I finally stuck to this (the Harry Potter inspired non-alcoholic butterbeer latte) version and it was just perfect! I took inspiration from the supposed Harry Potter recipe published first by Huffington Post or Fox News and it was delicious! I didn’t really want cream soda since I am not much of a soda person. So I tweaked that and added a dash of kahlua and some coffee to it. Result??

Harry Potter inspired butterbeer latte is the BEST LATTE EVER!

So the best part about this Harry Potter inspired buterbeer latre is that it barely takes any time and is a welcome change from hot chocolate or plain old coffee in this cold. Sweet but not too sweet, slightly salty from the butterscotch and so so creamy, this version of the famous Harry Potter inspired butterbeer latte will just make you feel warm inside out.

Do not miss this! Give it a go and lose yourself in the magical land where willing suspension of disbelief is the norm, where bravery has an innocent face, mother’s eyes and love is for “always”. Where true friends are the family we choose. Most importantly, for me and you and for all the other girls out there it sends the best message.

“Young girls are told you have to be the delicate princess. Hermione taught them that you can be the warrior”.

Instructions
  1. Start by making the caramel, which is the key. In a small saucepan over medium, combine the brown sugar and water. Bring to a gentle boil and cook till lightly bubbly on top.
  2. Now turn off the flame and add the butter, salt, vinegar, coffee and 1/4 heavy cream. Set aside to cool to room temperature.
  3. Once cool add the kahlua and mix well!
  4. Now whip together 2 tbsp of the above mixture and the remaining 1/4 cup cream till just thickened. Do not whip it for stiff peaks! Again, this step is optional. You can just omit this and add all the cream in the first mixing itself. Thickening the cream gives it a more latte feel and texture though.
  5. To serve: Pour the mixture into cups or glasses and then spoon the whipped topping over each. Or just ladle the hot drink into cups and enjoy!
Recipe Notes

If you want the typical foam and are fine with using soda, you can add the cream soda to the mixture in the glass before topping it with the whipped topping.

Kahlua is optional and rum can be used in place of Kahlua. Do not serve the kahlua version to kids.

If you dont want to add coffee, simply use milk/ cream for the same amount.
